Getting
Started
Have you
sat down to read the Bible and just didn’t know where to begin? If
you’re like most of us, you’ve got at least five things going on at one
time and it is hard to get into a book that doesn’t seem to have a story-line,
main characters, or a reasonable flow. Let me reassure you, once
you find a Bible that you can understand, once you are able to find your
way around the Bible, you will be amazed at the history, the characters,
the beauty and awe of reading from this book.
Let’s
look at how to get started, step-by-step.
Step
1. You’ll need to find a Bible that you are comfortable with
reading, one that you will be able to understand, for example the New International
Version. I recommend a Life Application Study Bible written in the
New International Version (NIV). Look for a Bible with tabs so that
you can find the books easier. The Life Application Study Bible contains
notes on the bottom of each page that better explain the verses as you
read them, and that tell you how to apply these teachings to your life
today.
Step
2. The Bible is divided into two sections – the Old Testament and the
New Testament. (The word “testament” means ‘a covenant between
God and Man’, so as you read, you will learn about promises that God made
to man centuries ago that He still honors today.)
Step
3. The Bible is divided into “Books”. Each book will have
chapters and verses. For example, when you see Genesis 1:2, Genesis
is the “book”, 1 is the “chapter”, and 2 is the “verse”. The
Chapter number is characterized by a BIG numeral, and the verse will be
the smaller numeral. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and
27 books in the New Testament.
Step
4. Both the Old and New Testaments are historical books. The
Old Testament is about the creation of the world and the lives of the Israelites
before the birth of Jesus Christ. The New Testament covers the birth
and life of Jesus Christ and teaches us how to live as Christ.
The Bible
is God’s love letter to us and is all about Jesus. It provides guidance
for our lives today and contains do’s, don’ts and promises. It contains
sin, forgiveness, miracles, and life changing events for then and now.
The Bible can be read over and over, and enjoyed each time.
Step
5. Now, go ahead, open your Bible. In the front, you’ll
find a Table of Contents that will direct you to various Chapters of the
Bible. Try out your new skill. Pick a book and look it up.
Next
week we will discuss Genesis 1:1 through Genesis 3:24. Go ahead and
read these chapters and verses. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand
the words, and enjoy your reading. As you read, think about the character
of God. Write down your thoughts as you read. In weeks to come,
you will enjoy referring back to these notes and seeing how you are learning
and growing in God’s word.
In Him,
Mary
