There
are days when my quiet time produces a word from the Lord that stays
with me for long periods of time. Days when I read scripture and
one particular word or phrase sticks out and I know that it is God
speaking to my heart.
On January 26, 2005, such a quite time occurred. My study that
day was from Deuteronomy 2, and as I read verse 31, the Lord spoke to
my heart with these words, “I have begun to give … begin to possess”.
So much of our lives are spent in the day to day, the temporal
attitudes and thoughts of the world. We become distracted by work
schedules, homework, paying bills, cleaning the house, grocery
shopping, etc., and the eternal perspective is lost. Not because
we don’t care, but because we get distracted.
If only we could get outside of ourselves and get a view of things from
a bigger perspective, we could understand that the world revolves
around God, not around us. We’re placed here to make a
difference, not to make ourselves comfortable. There is a world
bigger than our own little circle of comfort. Our circle of
comfort is the temporal life because it will pass away and our comfort
has nothing to do with the way God wants us to lead our
lives. He wants us to press through the discomfort and do
what He calls us to do so that He can produce spiritual growth in us
and begin to change us to be more like Him – from the inside out.
But this won’t happen if we’re focused on our own world and not on the
will of God.
When we put life into the proper eternal perspective rather than the
day to day perspective, we can apply God’s promises from the Bible and
trust that He is leading the way for us, that He does have a plan for
us, that He has our day to day needs taken care of … and we can focus
more on eternal things, knowing that He has the temporal under control.
Which brings us back to the verse in Deuteronomy 2:31.
“I have begun to give … begin to possess”.
In the temporal, we might see this verse as a verse of selfish gain –
and agree that the Lord needs to continue to give and give and give,
and we will take and take and take.
In the eternal perspective, however, it is clear that the Lord is
saying, “The harvest is plentiful, the workers are few… now go and make
disciples of all men”. Does that make you uncomfortable? Of
course it does. It’s the eternal perspective of our temporal
lives. Making a difference for the Kingdom of God, because it is
His Will.
We moved to Maryland last year knowing that God had chosen us to come
here. He has placed us in one of the best churches in the
universe (my opinion) where we receive love, support and spiritual
food. He has taken care of our physical (temporal) and spiritual
(eternal) needs and given us a year to settle in.
Now He is telling us that it is time for boldness, to speak up at every
opportunity He brings our way, to claim lost souls for Him, one at a
time – person by person, to love them and lead them into a closer
relationship with Him, to nurture those who need nurturing, to love
those who need love, to listen to His voice and bring those with hidden
gifts into His service and to bring the lost to Him. He is
calling us into the eternal perspective, moving forward with His will
in mind, not worrying about the thoughts of men or the attacks from the
evil realm. In the eternal perspective, He leads and
protects. Onward Christian Soldiers.
Though I sometimes get lost in the temporal, my prayer is that I
somehow float through the temporal things with an eternal perspective,
knowing that the quality of our life on earth doesn’t equal money or
worldly success, but it equals the work that we can do to increase,
build and grow the eternal Kingdom of God.
I invite you to join me in living this beautiful journey of life in the
temporary with an eternal perspective. The Lord says, “I
have begun to give … begin to possess”. The world is waiting for
the Saints of God to bring them the message of His forgiveness, love
and salvation. Will you also begin to possess the world for
Christ?
