End
of Road Work
Yesterday when I drove into my church parking
lot I saw a new sign. It wasn’t a new marquee type sign with quirky
little phrases making those who pass by take the time to think about where
they will be spending eternity. There wasn’t a brand new shiny bus
in the parking lot with a sign on the back saying follow me to… That would
have really been great, we need one. There wasn't a sign on the door saying
moved next door to our new larger sanctuary. Although God has
promised us that sign is coming very soon. This was a sign that no
one in our church had to spend a dime for. It was, I am pretty sure,
funded by the highway department. Right on the front lawn of my church
was a big orange and white sign with big black letters declaring this place
to be the end of road work.
I pulled on in and thought maybe the sign
was more than a sign. Was this sign, a sign, or was it only a sign, telling
whatever road work being done in the area ends here? I thought the sign
could have been at the business next door. It could have been in the vacant
lot on the other side of the church. It wasn't, it was here. Maybe
God decided we needed a sign with some little quirky saying out front like
so many churches have and that I always read when I travel. The other
day I saw a sign telling people to come inside for free spiritual help.
I thought that was kind of cute, I knew they were making a spoof of all
those signs that people who work for the devil have in their yards.
You know the ones that say spiritual advisor, palm reader, or fortuneteller.
I see these and always pray a prayer as I pass. I decided to take
the time to think about the new sign someone had provided to our church
free of charge.
The first word was end. The verse that came
to mind was Matthew 24:13, “But he that endureth to the end, the same shall
be saved.” Hey if that was what the sign meant, I had made
it. I had endured to the end - the end of the road work anyway. I
don't think that was what He was trying to tell me through this sign. I
moved on to the word road. I couldn't think of a single verse with
road in it. I thought about the verse, “Prepare ye the way of the
Lord, make his paths straight.” That is the only verse that I could
remember that came close to the word road. When I got home I looked
up the word road and found the only verse in the Bible with the word road
is found in I Samuel 27:10, “And Achish said ‘whither have ye made
a road?’ And David said ‘against the south of Judah’.” Perhaps
God might have been trying to ask me where had I made a road for Him.
I think we are all supposed to show others the road they can travel to
Jesus Christ. If we find the way, we are supposed to give some directions
to others who cross our path each day.
I came to the final word on that sign, work.
I thought of the verse, “I must work the works of him that sent me while
it is day, the night cometh when no man can work” John 9:4. I also
thought of the verse “But wilt thou know, o vain man, that faith without
works is dead.” Now I put all three words together and all
the verses that had come to my mind for each word. Maybe this sign
really was a sign, if for no one else at the church, for me. Perhaps
while enduring to the end of this road I am traveling I need to make sure
I am keeping the faith, remembering that faith no matter how great, if
I am not doing any work for Him, is dead. I know my time here is
very short and I need to be working whatever work I am going to do before
I come to the end of my road. We all ask God for a sign sometime
in our lives. I think most of us have already been given our sign,
we just get so busy we don’t take the time to notice.
