A Thankful Thought

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving-kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name (Psalm 138:2).

One Sunday evening while driving home from church, my husband explained that when Jesus lived on the earth, it cost a man a whole year’s wages to purchase a copy of the scripture.  The few individuals who owned such a prize counted it as their most precious possession.  That thought profoundly moved me.  I am so thankful to be living in an age where practically anyone can own a personal copy of the Bible.  With the affluence in America, I wonder what first century Christians would think if they could see the number of Bibles stacked on our coffee tables?  And would they stare in speechless horror to witness how some of us nonchalantly toss a copy of God’s Word onto the back seat of our car following a church service?

One of my small, personal crusades is to instill in my sons the priceless value of God’s Word.  In their way of thinking, mom gets “cranked” if she finds anything sitting on top of a Bible.  If God puts His Word above His own name, I can think of no reason whatsoever that a Christian should bury such Treasure under magazines, school books, or junk mail (and I have never been able to throw away a well-worn Bible away —even if some pages are missing, putting God’s Word in the garbage is unthinkable).

During this Thanksgiving season, let us reach up to the LORD and thank Him heartily for making the blessing of His Word so readily available to us, and let us read it diligently.  And let us soberly consider this: because of our easy, casual access to God’s complete revelation today, is it possible that responsibility for obeying its contents is greater for us than it was for saints in times past?

“…For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required…”
(Luke 12:28b).
