The Mourning Son
written by
E.J. Gray

Early in the morning that he had planned to die,
He eased out of bed, careful not to wake his wife.
He walked onto the beach to write his goodbyes.

Off in the horizon, he saw his final sunrise…
Then on the beach, before his teary eyes,
A lonely little boy was starting to cry.

The man walked up to the boy and knelt by his side,
And said, “Tell me young man, what’s the reason you cry
With the morning sun coming up over the tide?”

As he looked at the man he let out a sad sigh,
“That’s what my father saw, before he took his own life.”

This filled him with a sadness that soon turned to fright,
When he saw this little boy had green eyes like his wife’s.

He thanked God when he awoke, that it was only a dream in the night
His wife was awake and seem filled with delight.
She said, “I’ve been waiting to tell you, I’ve got a surprise.”

That was six years ago, no wait – it was five
But He knew the dream was the reason He was  alive.
He thanks God each day for the dream that dark night
Of the Mourning Son which helped to restore his sight.

Now as he sits and watches the sunrise
His young boy beside him, with no tears in his eyes.
