The Creation
Day One

God created our world.  He made it and everything in it.  The Bible teaches us in Genesis 1:1-2 that, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  But the earth was empty and dark.

Have you ever been in a place that is so dark that you can’t see your own hand in front of your face?  In the caverns of North Carolina, I have had that experience.  It is very scary.  There is darkness all around and sounds that come from places that you can’t see.   But do you know that even the darkness is not dark to God because He can see everything that goes on in the darkness as if it were light?  (Psalms 139:12).

The Bible teaches us that in the beginning, the earth was dark and empty and God said, “Let there be light” and there was light.  And God called the light “day” and the dark He called “night”.

God had a plan for creating the world that we live in.  Over the next few weeks, we will learn about all that He created on days one through six.

Remember, God sees us whether we are in the daytime or nighttime, whether it is dark or light.  When it is dark and you are afraid, ask God to protect you and help you not to be afraid.  For even the darkness is not dark to Him.  He can see you all the time.

PRAYER
“Lord, when I am afraid, help me remember that you are near.”

The Creation
Day Two

The Bible teaches us in Genesis 1:6-8 about what God created on the second day.

And God said, "Let there be a sky between the waters to separate water from water."  So God made the sky and separated the water under the sky from the water above it.
In the beginning, the earth was covered with water and was dark.  On day one of the creation, we learned that God created light and He separated the light from the dark.  Remember, the earth was covered with water.  On day two of the creation, God separated the water so that there would be water on the earth and water above the earth, and in the middle of the waters would be the heavens, or the sky.  On the second day, God created the sky.

Can you think of reasons why God would divide the waters so that there would be water on the earth and water above the earth?  The water on the earth provides for a lot of things, including a place for fish to swim, and water for us to drink and use.  The waters above the earth provide for things like clouds, rain, and snow.  And with the waters divided, we have air to breathe.

God promises to provide for all of our needs.  Remember when you have a need, you can pray and tell God your needs.  He is always listening.  Remember to call on Him.

PRAYER
"Lord, when I have a need, help me remember that I can call on you."

The Creation
Day Three

Have you ever thought about seeds?  I think about seeds every time I eat watermelon, or an orange – if I’m outside, I try to see how far I can spit the seeds.

Without even having to think about it, we know that if we plant a watermelon seed, we will grow watermelons, and if we plant flower seeds, a flower will grow. But have you ever stopped to think about how a flower knows to make seeds or why tiny oak trees grow around the base of a big oak tree?  Those questions are answered in day three of the creation.

Open your Bible to Genesis 1, and read verses 9 through 13

And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." God called the dry ground "land," and He called the gathered waters "seas."

Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation,  plants and trees that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds."

On day two of the creation, we learned that the earth was covered with water.  On day three, God separated the waters to form land and sea.

Then God told the land to produce grass, plants and trees.  But God did something else wonderful.  He created the plants and trees so that seeds would grow inside of them.  If you were to plant seeds from any plant, a new plant would grow.  That’s what this verse talks about when it says each plant bears seeds according to its kind.  When you plant a watermelon seed, you don’t grow a flower … you grow a watermelon.  The seeds grow into a plant just like the plant they came from.  This way, God knew that the earth would always have plants, grass and trees.   God cared about His creation and provided a way for the plants and trees to continue to grow for a long, long time.

PRAYER
"Lord, help me to remember to take care of
the things you have created. "

The Creation
Day Four

If you were to go outside on a clear night and look into the sky, you could see about 3,000 stars, even without a telescope.  With a small telescope, you could see about 100,000 stars.  The Milky Way Galaxy has about 100 billion stars in it – that’s more than we can see and count, but there are around 100 billion galaxies such as the Milky Way known to exist.  Astrologers have been trying for years to determine how many stars there are, but the more they look, the more stars they find.

Open your Bible to Genesis 1:14-19.   On the fourth day of creation, we learn that God created the sun, the moon and the stars.

And God said, "Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from the night… and God made two great lights-the sun  and the moon. He also made the stars. And God set them in the sky to give light on the earth.”
Psalm 147:4 tells us that God determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.  Did you know that God loves you more than all of His creation, including the stars.   How wonderful to know that we are special to the One who made the entire universe.

Prayer
"Lord, help me to remember how important I am to you.  You love me even more than you love all the stars in the sky."

The Creation
Day Five

Genesis 1:20 teaches that on the fifth day, God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing that lives in water, and every bird that flies in the sky. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."

The very first living creatures that God created were the birds and fish.  Fish to swim in the seas and birds to fill the skies.  God made the earth with land, water, sky and vegetation before he made the birds and fish.  He made things in this order so that the birds and fish would have food to eat and a place to live.

God wanted the fish and birds to be around for a long, long time.  That’s why He told them to ‘be fruitful’ or ‘have babies’.  Last spring, we had a mockingbird nest in our front yard with four eggs inside.  We kept an eye on the eggs so that we could see the babies as they hatched.  When they hatched, they looked so small and helpless, but after three weeks, they grew and learned to fly.  When God told the birds to be fruitful and increase, he was telling them to lay eggs, hatch them, and teach the babies to fly … and those babies would do the same as they got older.

God’s creation is very exciting, isn’t it?  The next time you see fish or birds, notice the many colors, shapes and sizes that God used when He made them.    God’s imagination is shown to us in His creation.  God cares about all of His creation, but mostly, He cares about you.

Prayer
Lord, bless me today, that I might see your creation in a new and exciting way.

The Creation
Day Six

Saving the best for last!  That’s what we do at mealtime, isn’t it!  We have dessert after dinner, not before.  And almost any child will agree that dessert is the best part of a meal.

God created the earth and land and sky and stars and plants during the first five days of creation.  What do you notice that is missing?  Open your Bible to Genesis 1:24-31 and let’s see what God saved for the last day of creation.

On the sixth day, God created living creatures – all kinds of animals, bugs and reptiles.  The last thing He created was a person, just like you and me!  God made us to be more like Him than anything else He had created.  When He made us, He gave us the ability to think and love, talk and sing, learn and teach.  God saved the best for last - the last thing He created was a person.

Prayer
Thank you for making me special.  Help me remember that everyone is special and to treat everyone with kindness.

The Creation
Day Seven

Have you ever noticed that when you wake up in the morning, you’re full of energy?  That’s because your mind and body are rested and ready to go!

Sometimes resting doesn’t seem like such a good idea because it stops you from playing and from doing other things.  Our bodies need rest so that we can be refreshed.

Open your Bible to Genesis 2:1. “By the seventh day of creation, God had finished the work He had been doing, so on the seventh day, He rested from all His work.”

God rested on the seventh day to teach us that it is okay to rest.  So the next time you are playing hard and an adult tells you it’s time to rest, try to remember that our bodies are made for hard work and play, but also for rest.  And after rest, you’ll be ready to go again!

Prayer
Thank you for teaching me that rest is important.

Mrs. Mary
(Mary Hamrick)

In the front of your Bible, you will find a Table of Contents that lists each book of the Bible.   The Bible is divided into “Books”.  Each book will have chapters and verses.  For example, when you see Matthew 6:9, Matthew is the “book”, 6 is the “chapter”, and 9 is the “verse”.   The chapter number is characterized by a BIG numeral, and the verse will be the smaller numeral.  The Bible is divided into two sections - the Old Testament and the New Testament.
